In-situ Seismic Performance Test at NiuDou Bridge

Taiwan has higher earthquake frequencies due to its location in the Pacific Rim. In addition, the seismic-resistant performance of aged bridges may be insufficient. Therefore, the assessment and reinforcement of earthquake-resistant bridges have been the tasks of the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE). In 2010, Yilan County planned to tear down and rebuild the Niu-Dou Bridge. After receiving this message, NCREE contacted the MOTC of the Taiwan Area National Freeway Bureau immediately to discuss the possibility of conducting field experiments during the deconstruction of the Niu-Dou Bridge. We deeply appreciated the hospitality and the dedications of the MOTC colleagues so that the NCREE can integrate with several universities such as NTU, NCTU, NTUT, NCU, and NYUST to conduct such a large-scale and high challenge bridge experiment, to verify the seismic performances and the seismic reinforcement technologies. This could amend and better the relevant specifications by utilizing the data of the experiment. Hopefully, this study could enhance and better the safety of seismic resistance.
